Overview of Team In Training and LLS

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. Founded in 1949, we are relentless in pursuit of our mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Research funded by LLS has led or contributed to advances such as chemotherapy, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation and new, targeted oral therapies such as Gleevec®. Currently there are 28 blood cancer researchers right here in Texas who are being funded by grants from the LLS. Also, it might be nice to add that last year alone, LLS awarded more than $70 million in research grants.

The need is critical: More than 920,000 Americans have leukemia, Hodgkin or non-
Hodgkin lymphoma or myeloma. Every four minutes, someone new is diagnosed with blood
cancer. Every 10 minutes, someone dies. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other
cancer among children under the age of 20. Lymphomas are the most common blood
cancers and incidence increases with age. The survival rate for myeloma is only 33 percent.
Incidence is nearly twice as high among African Americans as for all other races. Because of
LLS's dedication to research, the survival rates for children diagnosed with leukemia have
improved by more than 61% since 1975.

Team In Training® (TNT) is the nation’s most widely recognized personal endurance sports training program designed to prepare an individual to run or walk a 26.2 mile marathon, cycle a 100-mile century ride, or complete a triathlon. Since TNT started more than 420,000 people have completed an event with the Team and together have raised more than $1.0 Billion dollars to support the LLS mission. Men and women from all walks of life and all levels of fitness, raise funds in honor of blood cancer patients or survivors, to support LLS. In exchange, LLS provides them with a 4-5 month training program focused on the completion of a major endurance event. Participants select and train for an event from their local chapter’s list of events. During the 4-5 month coached training period, TNT participants will learn all about how to safely prepare for their sport and will participate in group and individual training runs, walks, swims or rides. LLS also provides transportation to the event, lodging, meals and entry into the race. TNT is promoted nationwide, by all 68 chapters of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
